Your home is likely your most valuable asset. Since a colony of termites can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home, it’s critical that you protect your investment. The pests are often hidden while they’re damaging the structure of your home. Because of this, it can take a while for a homeowner to notice the signs of a termite infestation. Read on so you’ll know what to look for in your home.
1. Piles of Wings are Signs of a Termite Infestation
Termites shed their wings after they swarm, so if you see piles of shed wings around your home, it is one of the signs of a termite infestation. A newly formed colony is the most probable cause of the wings. They are usually found near entrances like doors and windows.
2. Termite Droppings
If you notice brown droppings resembling sawdust, there is a high possibility that you are housing a colony of termites. These droppings, called frass, are usually found around baseboards.
3. Termite Holes
Termites leave behind tiny holes that can easily be overlooked. The openings, also known as exit holes, can be found on wooden surfaces and drywall and are only ⅛ of an inch wide.
4. Mud Tubes Around the Foundation
Some types of termites build tunnels to gain access to your home. The tunnels offer them shelter from direct sunlight and provide moisture so they can survive. You can spot these brown tubes that are about as wide as a pencil along your foundation. This is one of the more visible signs of a termite infestation.
5. Perforated Wooden Surfaces
Wooden surfaces are the most vulnerable to termites. Termites eat wood from the inside out, so it becomes hollow. One the damage is advanced, it will start to become visible on wooden surfaces.
6. Water Damage Goes With Signs of a Termite Infestation
Termites like to invade areas that are already damaged by water. It offers them sufficient moisture, which is one of their primary requirements. Look out for any of the following signs that may indicate either termite or water damage:
• Paint peeling off, or cracking
• Damaged walls and wood floors
• Sagging ceiling or roof
• Resistance when opening or closing windows and doors
Pay attention to these seemingly minor signs, as they may mean you have a termite problem in your home. If you notice any of the items outlined above, bring in a professional inspector for a wood-destroying insect inspection.
